BOSTON, November 28, 2007 – American Public Television (APT) concluded its annual Fall Marketplace on Nov. 10, 2007 in Tucson, Ariz. This four-day event drew nearly 300 attendees – primarily public television programmers, general managers and producers – and was the most-attended conference to date.
The conference featured previews of more than 100 new programs available for U.S public television schedules. The vast collection of titles spanned a variety of genres ranging from drama and nature to science and children's programming. Featured titles included: THE BEST OF THE JACK BENNY SHOW, a collection of star-studded episodes from the classic network series that ran from 1950-1965; PAUL MCCARTNEY: ECCE COR MEUM, a music special featuring McCartney's classical oratorio in four movements; LITTLE AMADEUS, a charming new animated series that entertains and educates children about music; and RUDY MAXA'S WORLD, a new 13-part series featuring the acclaimed travel host's sophisticated take on a destination's history, culture, architecture, politics and cuisine. Additionally, APT unveiled SARA'S WEEKNIGHT MEALS, a new 20-episode cooking series featuring celebrity chef Sara Moulton's fast, tasty and routine-breaking entrees.
The event also drew several of public television's most popular hosts, including chefs Lidia Bastianich, Sara Moulton, Tina Nordström, and newcomer Sara La Fountain, as well as travel hosts Rudy Maxa, Richard Bangs, Darley Newman and Joseph Rosendo. Editor-in-Chief of Gourmet magazine, Ruth Reichl, also attended to help promote the second season of her James Beard nominated series GOURMET'S DIARY OF A FOODIE. Chris Kimball of AMERICA'S TEST KITCHEN FROM COOK'S ILLUSTRATED was on hand to accept APT's MVP Award for his outstanding contributions to public television. Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner also appeared to promote his new show DEMYSTIFYING DYSLEXIA. Jenner spoke of his challenges as an accomplished athlete too often defeated by his own dyslexia.
APT President and CEO Cynthia Fenneman opened the event with a keynote speech, highlighting the company's essential role within the public television system and the strength its programming brings to public television station schedules. Fenneman announced that APT presented 12 of the top 20 and 52 of the top 100 highest-rated public television programs during the 2006-07 TV season and was responsible for 7721 airings in the primetime and fringe dayparts – APT's largest number of airings within television's metered markets ever.
