J esus Christ, arguably the most important figure in the past 2,000 years of western culture, also was the most frequently represented figure in the visual arts up to the Modern period. Images of Christ, taken out of their original contexts as powerful religious objects, provide fascinating windows into the cultures and times in which they were created. THE BODY OF CHRIST: IN THE ART OF EUROPE AND NEW SPAIN 1150-1800 presents a stunning examination of a recent exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, focusing on 76 objects drawn from collections across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe — sculptures, illuminated manuscripts, metal work and textiles from seven centuries and two continents. The program offers rare, in-depth analysis of the work of great masters and of anonymous, highly skilled craftsmen.
