In this installment, members of a syndicate that own a winning racehorse are being battered to death one by one, and Barnaby and Scott must unravel an aristocratic family’s secrets to find the killer. Fifty-something Angela is the widowed mistress of Bantling Hall. Here, Blackiston talks about her character on
Midsomer Murders.
“Angela believes she was born into the highest strata of society. Her family has a long history of owning property and titles and it never occurs to her that there is anything wrong with having privilege. She feels she has power over other people, because of her background.
“She has a strong attachment to her values and the values of the family. She was abused by her husband and although she minds this very much, she hides it because in her society they are used to covering their feelings from the world. It’s a very conservative way of looking at the world, which restricts her and those around her. She is pretty flawed.”
Sadly, Angela’s attitude is out of step with her financial situation. “Her husband was a gambler and he lost the family fortune. Her clothes are a bit moth-eaten and she grows vegetables in order to make ends meet, because she doesn’t want to lose the house. She adores her brother Geoffrey – he behaves like a child and she protects him and keeps him safe, until a little boy turns up and opens a can of worms.”
