#601 - Avi Kwa
We learn the story of the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument while touring the Joshua tree forest and the Spirit Mountain sacred site, then explore the Kelso Dunes and lava tubes of Mojave National Preserve.
#602 - Cedarville to Tripoint Trail
We’re just over the border in Cedarville, California, learning more about that visitor-friendly town, plus obsidian hunting at a nearby mine site and a very beautiful trip to the Tripoint Trail as we seek the monument that marks the meeting of Oregon, California, and Nevada.
#603 - Verdi
“Trail Whisperer” Kurt Gensheimer takes us on a hike in Dog Valley and teaches us about trail maintenance, then we learn Verdi’s history from a local man who is restoring his old schoolhouse into a history and events center. We then follow the first two stops on the Washoe ArTrail, including a challenging hike up to an old cement air mail arrow.
#604 - Great Basin National Park
After many years we revisit Great Basin National Park. Chris gets to check one off her bucket list as she climbs Wheeler Peak, while Dave shows a less hardcore option on the Bristlecone/Glacier Trail. We get an update on the town of Baker and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lehman Caves.
#605 - Tahoe Rim Trail
The Tahoe Rim Trail offers something for everyone. Chris follows a long section requiring an overnight campout, while Dave takes a day hike on a section near Tahoe Vista, then joins a crew to help make some trail.
#606 - Dayton vs. Genoa
We visit the two towns claiming to be the first settlement in Nevada. Near Dayton we explore the townsite of Sutro, home of the Comstock-era Sutro Tunnel. In Genoa we step into history at Mormon Station and hike the Genoa Canyon Trail.
#607 - Valley of Fire and Spring Mountains National Recreation Area
After two decades Chris returns to the spectacular Valley of Fire to be reacquainted with this unique attraction, then learns some history and enjoys a spectacular trail view at Spring Mountains State Recreation Area.
#608 - Truckee
Dave learns the unique history of Truckee on a walking tour with Greg Zirbel that includes a stop in jail, then tries a little neighborhood snowshoeing before a visit to FiftyFifty Brewing Company.
#609 - Pyramid Lake
Chris Orr and guest host Sydney Martinez bike the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail from Wadsworth to Pyramid Lake, including a fish research facility and the museum/visitor center, then go out on the lake to expand their perspective of this Paiute cultural icon.
#610 - Access for All
This special episode introduces outdoor recreation opportunities for those with mobility challenges. Includes the Reno Adaptive Cycling Center, the Center for Adaptive Riding and a visit to Beneficial Designs in Minden.
#611 - Toiyabe Crest Trail
Kurt Gensheimer takes host Chris Orr on a trek through the Toiyabe Crest Trail, a former Civilian Conservation Corps project from the 1930s that is being upgraded by Gensheimer, who is known as “The Trail Whisperer.”
#612 - Mt. Rose to Peavine Peak
These landmarks of the Reno area offer much to enjoy. Chris learns some geology while summiting both mountains, on foot and off road, while Dave enjoys a Mt. Rose waterfall and the mining history of Peavine.
