Filmed primarily in the summer of 2014, ON HOME GROUND: LIFE AFTER SERVICE gives an intimate look into the lives of three veterans who returned home to the Adirondacks in upstate New York after deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. The film poses the question: after all the sacrifice, when does home finally feel like home again? The documentary guides viewers on a journey of re-assimilation into civilian life with veterans living near the Adirondack Mountains. Their small hometowns are scenic and peaceful, but also remote and isolating. The physical distance means limited access to essentials like healthcare, and a struggling economy contributes to widespread unemployment for veterans. Years after coming back, each vet reflects on their coming home, rebuilding relationships, grappling with physical and mental changes, and finding a unique grounding in the camaraderie among fellow veterans.
