At the age of 55, Lindamae Lawelawe Carillo Maldonado discovered the truth about her identity and the existence of her birth family. She was born on the Island of Moloka'i on the peninsula of Kalaupapa, where people suspected of having Hansen’s Disease (leprosy) were isolated. Lindamae was among the many children taken away from their mothers at birth and placed for adoption.
