American jails hold more of our people than any other country in the history of the world. For many, just one arrest is enough to get caught up in a vicious cycle of incarceration, release and re-imprisonment. When they reenter society after paying their debt, the formerly incarcerated face real barriers, both legal and societal, that can prevent them from finding a job or a decent place to live, keep them from reconnecting with their families and loved ones, and hinder them from turning their lives around.
