TROLLEY PARK: OUT WEST visits the last remaining trolley park on the West Coast
– Portland, Oregon’s Oaks Park – which includes the oldest roller rink in the
U.S. These parks were born when trolley companies started adding picnic areas,
playgrounds and carousels at the "end of the line" to increase attendance on
the weekends, helping usher in the golden age of amusement parks. In the early
1900s, there were more than 1,000 trolley parks. Now, only a dozen of the
historical pit stops remain.
