Position Title: Digital Content Manager
Supervisor: Director of Systems
Summary: The Digital Content Manager works closely with the Director of Systems, V.P. of Technology, content VPs, VP of Communications, CEO and various content and communications staff members to create and assure the strategic, timely and opportunistic publishing of American Public Television (APT) and Create’s digital online content to APT’s various websites, third party syndicators, social media and emerging platforms. The Digital Content Manager will be primarily responsible for execution of digital content strategy, project management, website management and video encoding activities. S/he will have significant contact with project consultants, vendors, content suppliers and other public media organization staff.
Essential Functions:
- Contribute strongly to the strategic direction and provide technical and content support for all APT website properties (APTonline.org, CreateTV.com, APTWW.org), including APT presence on a variety of third-party and social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and iTunes
- Perform a variety of website management and video encoding activities, including creation of video players, playlists, widgets, templates and tools, mobile style sheets and mobile apps
- Manage project work scope and tasks, including troubleshooting, problem-tracking, and completing related deliverables
- Convert broadcast tape to digital files for station screenings, file sharing, highlights reels, etc.
- Participate as a key member of the APT Online Team
- Serve as liaison, sometimes with another APT staff member, between content suppliers and third party digital distributors
- Service APT’s digital distribution needs both proactively and responsively
- Advocate and ensure American Public Television is properly credited/branded when digital content is shared with third party or for any digital distribution
- Work closely with APT’s content staff to ensure that digitized program promos, teleconferences, program excerpts/segments/full length stream on APT websites
- Provide third parties with technical specs and delivery requirements for digital content
- Update APT content, communications, IT staff and CEO with monthly updates on APT’s digital assets on APT websites and third party platforms
- Work closely with Business Development in brainstorming and executing plans and deals for revenue-producing distribution of APT’s digital assets
- Manage interns as necessary

Qualifications
This position requires strong technical skills along with equally strong management skills; the ability to see the big picture and strategize the distribution of digital content; excellent project management skills; attention to detail; strong writing ability; knowledge of digital asset management and processing skills; strong interpersonal skills; professional demeanor and phone manner; knowledge of Public Television programming a plus.
Education, Skills, Experience
Required experience and skill sets include:
- Server-side scripting (Java, Perl, Python, PHP)
- Database skills (SQL, MySQL)
- Web Server administration (Lotus Domino 8.5 experience required)
- Client-side scripting (jQuery, Javascript), and web presentation (CSS3, XSL)
- Web services (XML, SOAP, REST, XSLT, JSON)
- Video compression and encoding Flash, H.264, HTML5, MPEG2
- Metadata standards and structures (including PBCore)
- Digital asset management
- Integration of social media tools
- Responsive web design
- Mobile application development (iPhone, Android)
- Familiarity with internet- connected devices (GoogleTV, Samsung Store) preferred
- Familiarity with Lotus software applications a strong plus
Bachelor’s degree (or exceptional equivalent experience); at least three years’ experience in digital content publishing and distribution, preferably at a television company.

Demonstrated experience in a multi-tasking environment. Aptitude to handle demanding technical needs and demonstrate enterprising thinking about APT’s digital online strategy.
