Vice President, Technology

Reports to: President and CEO

Summary – Job Objective:

The Vice President, Technology oversees APT’s technology strategy and planning, provides transformational leadership for systems and services supporting APT’s content distribution methods and information technology operations, develops new capabilities in online, streaming and cloud-based content delivery and management, and plays a dynamic role on the leadership team. Ideal candidate will identify with and be able to articulate APT’s mission and vision into sound strategic objectives, partnerships, and public media development initiatives. This person reports to the President and CEO of American Public Television.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Overall Leadership and Management

  1. Serve as highly engaged member of APT management on a variety of matters, including strategic planning; broadcast and digital initiatives; diversity, equity and inclusion; and mapping the future of APT.
  2. Lead, manage and motivate the organization’s information technology and content distribution services teams, as well as others throughout the organization, in a wide range of initiatives.
  3. Develop and expand key relationships with public media’s local stations and national organizations, other media groups, and standards bodies.
  4. Develop, manage, and forecast annual budgets, capital expenditures and financial updates.

Technology Leadership

  1. Serve as the principal technology management leader. Direct the strategic design, acquisition, management, and implementation of the company-wide technology infrastructure.
  2. Share forward thinking vision. Initiate, research and analyze technology opportunities for innovation in APT’s products and services.
  3. Drive and manage full life cycle of projects.
  4. Develop operational calendar, business plans, models, and analysis for new projects and initiatives.
  5. Evaluate technology capabilities and identify needs to support program acquisition, data management, file management, transcoding and delivery, business continuity, and information security.
  6. Design and manage proof of performance reporting services, including analytics.
  7. Evaluate products and services, including product demonstrations and proof-of-concept project management.
  8. Develop technological workflows in collaboration with department heads to ensure efficient, high quality, and cost-effective outcomes and digital audio, video and streaming.
  9. Negotiate contract terms and service level agreements with APT technology vendors.
  10. Attend appropriate public television and leading technology events, webinars, and conferences to stay abreast of industry and public media needs, discover entrepreneurial opportunities, and build strategic relationships.
  11. Supervise staff, consultants, and direct vendors in support of departmental functions, including cross-training and professional development for IT, distribution services, communications, content, finance and business development staff.
  12. Facilitate and oversee product and services beta test groups comprised of key PTV client constituencies.
  13. Play a key role in the technology planning of the annual conference (APT Fall Marketplace).
  14. Prepare and deliver executive-level presentations/materials internally and externally.
  15. Maintain dependable work attendance.

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Perform any related duties as assigned.
  2. Provide technology support for Board and other meetings.
  3. Assist other departments as needed.

Qualifications and Abilities Required

This position requires at least a bachelor’s degree (technology-related major preferred) or the combination of equivalent education and work experience, 5-10 years related experience in technology to support broadcast, digital, and information technology, with at least five years’ experience in content distribution and/or operations, and leadership experience with demonstrated management abilities. Experience at a public television station or public media organization is highly preferred. Digital content experience is a must.

      o Web content management systems

  • Familiarity with public media’s interconnection system (sIX)
